Ultra-cool hybrid lasers

In this project we were to investigate a hybrid fibre-bulk laser architecture combined with cryogenic cooling of the bulk active medium as a route to high output-power in the ~2μm wavelength regime. This project was to also foster collaboration with the Thermal fluids and Superconductivity (TFSC) Research Group (Cryogenics Institute), with the view of a potentially larger applications oriented project on this topic. Funding was provided to develop a cryogenic cooling system that would enable the demonstration of this technique at sufficiently high power levels, which would normally be considered in the regime where thermal effects are detrimental to the laser performance.
